USTRC Team Roping Events and Number System

The United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC) is the largest team roping organization in the world, operating the handicap-based number classification system that defines competitive amateur and semi-professional roping in the United States. Founded in 1990, the USTRC pioneered the concept of number-based competition divisions that allow ropers of all ability levels to compete in matched, fair brackets without facing competitors far above or below their skill level.

USTRC individual numbers range from #1 through #9, with each number representing a relative skill level — a #1 is a true beginner, a #5 is a solid intermediate competitor, and a #8 or #9 is performing at a level approaching professional caliber. Team totals create combined divisions: two #5 ropers create a #10 team, two #6.5 ropers create a #13 team, and so on through the #15, #17, and higher-number opens. The system ensures competitive balance across the spectrum of amateur and semi-professional competitors.

USTRC numbers are assigned through a combination of self-assessment and competitive verification. The organization reserves the right to reclassify ropers whose performance exceeds their stated number — competing below your number is called sandbagging and carries serious social and competitive consequences. Moving up in number as your skills improve is expected and respected in the roping community.

USTRC-affiliated jackpots and qualifier events run year-round across the United States, feeding into regional championships, state finals, and the USTRC National Finals. TeamRoping.ai tracks USTRC-affiliated events across all active roping states.
